Abaca String Band and the Film, Andrew and Wendy, by Josh Aronson at the Studio Around the Corner, Saturday, August 22, 6:30PM Film, 7:30PM Concert. Refreshments will be available.
Join us as we explore the connection between healing and music. The evening begins with a screening of the Film, Andrew and Wendy, by Academy Award nominee, Josh Aronson. The 30-minute documentary film tells the story of a New York couple at a crisis point. Andrew Schulman, who is in a coma, is not responding to anything and his prognosis is frighteningly bleak. Wendy’s inspired idea to play Bach for him actually brings him back, a miraculous outcome even his doctors acknowledge. This remarkable love story analyzes the mysterious healing power of music as Andrew returns to the ICU to bring music to its desperately ill patients — not for entertainment, but for healing.
The Abaca String Band was founded by guitarist Andrew Schulman in 1991. This unique group, Andrew Schulman, 8-string Guitar; Tamara Volskaya, Mandolin; Robert Zubrycki, Violin; Julie Goodale, Viola; and Marc Schmied, Double Bass, began by performing events at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Abaca String Band frequently tours throughout the United States and has been presented in concert at Lincoln Center, The Newport Music Festival and the Troy Music Hall, among many others and have been featured artists on the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series. They have performed for many special events including Christmas performances at The White House and The Library of Congress. Their debut CD, "Live From Chautauqua", was broadcast nationwide by Public Radio International in 1998. They will make their 4th appearance at the Chautauqua Institution this summer.
The program of popular classical, folk and jazz standards is sure to delight all audience members. Abaca will play arrangements of music by Vivaldi, Mozart, Ravel, Boccherini, Villa Lobos, Gershwin, Ellington and more.
